There's more to being a scientist than just the science, and the long training and years of experience is necessary. Undergrads are scientists-in-training. In my mind, science slowly takes a over more of your life until it becomes your "thing", then you're a scientist?

I don't disagree with the first part... but PhD students and postdocs are also training positions right? It would be absurd to say that these people are only 'scientists-in-training' rather than 'scientists' - they are the ones who produce all the science
