Who has significant research experience in Uganda or better yet is from Uganda and working on sustainability and would be willing to be interviewed for 30 minutes by my students this semester? Very enthusiastic undergrads. Forever grateful for a qualified volunteer!

This bickering among Canadians over their leader spending 900 Dollars to keep their leader in good health makes me smile indulgently.

Remaining invested in fossil fuels is bad for your planet, bad for your portfolio, bad for your kids. When change comes it will be like transitions usually are: slow, barely noticeable first. And then so fast it will be impossible to get out of the way.

But one could still argue that we should be judged on our best work and not just on the sheer number. Some may achieve their best work through being prolific while others may choose to focus on a few pieces. So it’s not the pathway that’s incentivized but what’s being judged.

If this is right, capping the amount one can publish to promote quality of output is barking up the wrong tree.

Strengthen post-publication review by pre-publishing expected results, sharing methods with peers and readers (for data, analysis, inference), allowing reader reviews to be tagged to published papers... Won't solve everything, but will reduce some frustrations and inequities.

As bad is the time taken for research to reach public domain-some of best work gets rejected multiple times, terrible stuff published. Add insult to injury? published behind high paywalls that rise higher with increasing success of commercial journals-Looking at you, 3/4

Flaws in pre-publication review processes-uneven rigor, gatekeepers and veto players who work to maintain the status quo, dependence on small # review, declining support from commercial presses in favor of surplus extraction, highly unequal access rules for new researchers, 2/4

Hmmm, we already have two forms of peer review that help assess quality: prepublication and postpublication. I think the post-pub review process is in many ways more robust than the closed, privilege creating, status-consolidating, reputation-inflected prepub review process. 1/4
