None of which supports the conclusion that CAM is valid medicine.https://twitter.com/usnehal/status/997323684137365504 …

Telling a woman with fibromyalgia breast reduction will relieve back pain is as unethical. Likely to make it worse. Oversight of thousands of MDs through insurance approvals and fraud and abuse work is eye-opening on ethics issues in healthcare.

Exactly! And the hedge pretending that CAM is an adjunct instead of a cure is simply disingenuous. I drank lemonade during my cancer tmt, and I'm now NED. So is it ok for me to sell my special miracle cancer cure recipe as long as I say "adjunct?"

Quite honestly any promised “cure” should always be suspect regardless of who or what. No one can promise a cure to an individual. On the issue of some cancers, we overtreat even when cure is not attainable. And the whole “beat” cancer implies lack of cure is failure.

Any claimed medical "treatment" should be supported by evidence of potential benefit greater than risk, which is where CAM advocates consistently fail, and we've come full circle.

Not an “advocate” for CAM or against it. Am an advocate for listening, partnering, not overstating, not making assumptions, using neutral tone, using consistent standards, assessing level of harm to prioritize response, self policing, being honest, and cultivating humility.

You sure could've fooled me. It was skeptics discussing a negative acupuncture study that got you worked up, & many of the things you say (e.g., "allopathic," deflection of criticism if acupuncture worth complaints about conventional medicine) are straight or of the CAM playbook.

If not allopathic, what do you call medicine by MDs? DOs practice osteopathic medicine. CAM is a non-specific term for music therapy, acupuncture, etc. I understand you personally dislike the term or the history. It is a standardly used one.https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/allopathic-medicine …

I am genuinely perplexed. Communication on Twitter requires use of words. What is the right word? Allopathic is used in JAMA and Academic Medicine. It is used in undergrad advising programs to identify potential paths (MD, DO, etc). Is in usage. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/12425709/ …

It is important to use the right lens, not bias when forming judgments. Allopathic (vs osteopathic) is commonly used in medical education or licensing agencies. “Most students attend traditional (or allopathic) medical schools that offer an MD.” http://medschool.ucla.edu/body.cfm?id=1158&action=detail&ref=1019 …

Changing status quo, eradicating a word used by med schools, ACGME, JAMA is an ambitious goal. Look at how hard it has been eradicate the N word. If you feel strongly about the word, best of luck. I hear you on who coined it and history. There are many similar battles on words.

Please review my original tweets. Lack of consistency in standards was why I replied. We’ve already uncovered a false assumption you made. Allopathic is a term used broadly, not only by “CAM advocates.” Anyone with ACGME or regulatory experience will similarly confuse you.
