What utter bullshit about the @CDCgov not being "banned" from gun research. No one ever said that it was. 1/ https://medium.com/@trevorburrus/lets-commit-to-lowering-gun-deaths-by-50-percent-in-ten-years-will-the-parkland-students-7c5832e123a3 …

Here's
@stevennovella, explaining what really happened. 2/ https://sciencebasedmedicine.org/gun-violence-as-a-public-health-issue/ …1 reply 1 retweet 1 likeShow this thread -
Basically, Congress passed the Dickey Amendment, which stipulated that “none of the funds made available for injury prevention and control at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC] may be used to advocate or promote gun control.” 3/

This stipulation had its intended effect. It cast a pall over gun violence research. What Congress did was to reduce the CDC budget by the exact amount spent on gun violence research. This was clearly intended to intimidate the CDC by directly threatening their funding. 4/

The Dickey Amendment intimidation tactic worked. The @CDCgov has produced very little research on gun violence since then. The Dickey Amendment must be repealed. Even Dickey now thinks the Amendment was a bad idea. 5/5 https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2018/02/the-government-banned-gun-violence-research-22-years-ago-this-senator-wants-to-put-an-end-to-it/ …
