"@NIH needs to raise the bar for funding alternative medicine research" Yep. A better move: simply kill the @NIH_NCCIH! Legitimizes bunk. https://www.statnews.com/2018/02/26/alternative-medicine-nih-funding/ … via @statnews "Many [most] of the interventions have proven to be worthless." @McGillOSS @gorskon @ScienceBasedMed

Two diff answers here. 4 sure there’s value in assessing evidence for long-used/folk-used/much-used tx or those w a plausible mechanistic explanation 2 C if they work. But @CaulfieldTim u feel it was intended 2 justify bunk from start? @skepticpedi u think maybe well-intentioned?

No, don't think that was the explicit intention, but that is how it seems to play out. I just don't think needed (fund potentially valuable stuff through other institutes) & downsides (legitimization, waste of $, etc) too great...

Not quite correct. It wasn't the EXPLICIT intention of the Center, but it sure as hell was Tom Harkin's EXPLICIT intention that the office he founded that ultimately became @NIH_NCCIH provide a scientific justification for quackery. That was baked in from the very beginning.

I just did a Tweetstorm on my lunch hour with the history of @NIH_NCCIH. Enjoy.https://twitter.com/gorskon/status/968918798928576513 …

In another conversation, it became clear to me that many skeptics don't know the actual history of @NIH_NCCIH . Some seem to think that it was meant as a place to rigorously study alternative medicine claims. Let me disabuse everyone of that idea. https://sciencebasedmedicine.org/true-evolution-integrative-medicine/ … 1/

It didn't take long. I sit at my computer and eat, and some of that Tweetstorm was cut and pasted from my post on NCCIH. :-)
