I also identified with R until the Iraq War came about (granted I was only old enough to vote starting in 2000), but the fervent racism and anti-science ideology of people in my hometown and home state identifying as R also drove me away, both figuratively and literally.

Certainly didn't predict things were *this bad*, although voters and the GOP gleefully supporting a candidate egging on his supporters while they attacked minorities at his rallies gave me a pretty awful feeling about what would happen if such an administration came into power.
