Virtually every patient I've talked with who seeks out alternative medicine for a difficult condition has a story about a doctor who said "There's nothing more we can do for you." Every doctor I've talked with has told me that there's no doctor in the world who would say that.

Doctors say, "We can't cure your condition, but here is what we can do prolong your life and improve its quality." Some patients hear, "There's nothing more we can do for you." This is the disconnect.

Well that’s a WHOLE lot better than “I’m sorry there’s nothing we can do [stop].”

          I personally know people who’ve been told I can’t do anything for you - we’ve ruled out X Y and Z but don’t know what’s wrong.

Why slightly tweak to bridge the disconnect? Just as true: "We don't currently have a cure for your condition. We will prolong your life & improve its quality as much & long as possible & keep following the research for any new therapies." After all, other Gleevecs still happen

Also: I don't seek out alternative medicine (obvs), but I've ABSOLUTELY had more than one doctor tell me those EXACT words ("There's nothing more we can do for you") w nothing else. And I'd like to think my credibility re the medical field is pretty unassailable.

Having heard this from doctor, I actually found it comforting...it was framed like this: this is a benign condition that causes you little distress...not sure why, but there it is. I totally relaxed and it eventually went away. That took guts and knowledge for them to say.
