If you weren't Jewish or Communist not much immediately changed after Hitler took over. Things were pretty normal for most for >6 years before the war. Only slowly did changes become apparent: Nuremberg laws, Hitler Youth, prison for dissent, Jews excluded from society, etc.https://twitter.com/jenashleywright/status/961349458725306368 …

The thing that bothers me most is how normal everything seems until I look at the news. I still cook for my husband, and buy groceries, and write, and go to movies -- my daily life isn't different until I check the TV and realize parents are being torn from their families.

And he fortunately made it out of the country right before Hitler and his party came to power. This is a lovely bio on aspects of his social justice life. https://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/how-celebrity-scientist-albert-einstein-used-fame-denounce-american-racism-180962356/ …

See also: Sebastian Haffner (real name: Raimund Pretzel). Husband memoir, "Defying Hitler,@ is striking for its description of how normal everything was at first after the Nazis took power.

The Concentration Camp at Dachau was opened 22 March 1933, and Himmler described it as "the first concentration camp for political prisoners" to be used to restore calm to Germany.

Unions were banned as were all non Nazi political parties, prominent non KDP politicians, especially SPD were sent to concentration camps, the SA were used as auxiliary police etc. Lots changed quickly for many who were not Jews or KDP.
