We are in the middle of a vaccine refusal crisis. The same people who are refusing vaccines are in a position to accept or reject climate science. The future of our planet depends on learning our lesson about why people distrust science—and addressing that distrust.

With COVID-19, it's possible to mandate vaccines and mandate masks. It may even be possible to defeat the virus with 30% vaccine refusal. The same will not be true of climate change. Addressing it will require MORE trust and MORE solidarity. We must work on it now!

In fact, in the VERY FIRST TWEET of this thread I made a rookie mistake. I said people "distrust science." That's false. People don't distrust science. They distrust science communicators. Scientific institutions. Government funded science. The difference is key.

Actually, no, that's not quite right either. People distrust science whose conclusions and recommendations do not jibe with their preexisting ideology, such as evolution, climate science, public health science, vaccines, etc.

For sure—although I'd say what you're talking about is a little different. People don't want to believe conclusions that cut against their pre-existing ideology. But with climate change and vaccines, unlike creation "science", I think it's more about distrust in institutions.

There is no "anti-climate-science" ideology, the way there's a "Biblical literalist" ideology. There's only "I don't trust liberal institutions and their conclusions"—whatever those conclusions happen to be.

Oh yes there is. Climate science denial fits in the whole free market fundamentalist ideology in the same way that creationism fits into fundamentalist Christianity.

Yes, but one finds climate science denial very strong in the "dominionist" (as opposed to "stewardship") religious segments & it correlates fairly well with creationism. Ask the folks at @NCSE, like @NCSEreid, who've been dealing with one for decades and the other for some years.

Creationism has also been a friend to free-market ideology tbh. The broad anti-regulation push growing out of the 1970s depended on broadly destroying the prestige of *Science!* for the sake of Big Tobacco, the fossil fuel sector etc.
