Once #COVID19 hit, it was, alas, a natural pivot for @GOP and the right to continue that resistance to public health interventions against the pandemic, including allying themselves with antivaxxers against #CovidVaccine mandates of any kind.

I trace this back to early 2020 when Trump and his supporters saw that the pandemic was going to be a liability and reacted in a way to defend him.
-
The idea of just doing what was right never entered Trump's mind. It was more "I need to defend myself from looking bad."

It’s so embarassing. How long have we been writing about this? And the leading scientists in this country still act shocked, *shocked* when they learn there are pseudoscientists out there bending facts to their advantage? Comms is hard, buy a helmet Francis.

I think anti-vax movement was underestimated & we consigned them to simply mommy blogs, etc. Pre-Trump they targeted GOP to indoctrinate them into opposing vaccine requirements in schools. They had a plan & executed it. National health agencies didn’t have robust response.
-
Out of curiosity, a while back I looked up the first time I ever wrote about the alliance between
@GOP and antivaxxers. It was around 10 years ago, when a California antivax group allied itself with the East Bay Area Tea Party around ten years ago. - Show replies

“How did we get here?” I mean it’s pretty obvious. One political party cares more about the preservation of wealth by an elite few than they do about mass death and they have an information infrastructure that is very powerful. Pretty easy to explain.
