The best part of watching old episodes of House is my surgeon wife arguing with the TV: "That's the anaesthetists job! Why is there even a neurologist in the room??"

literally no nurses anywhere despite nurses literally doing most of the actual PHYSICAL WORK in the hospital

Nurses don't exist and all doctors are perfect generalists with no real speciality. Also, there's only one department and it's usually surgery

Regarding "e.r." I used to complain all the time about how ER docs seemed to be able to do every specialty (I recall ER docs doing invasive radiology in one scene, endoscopy in another) and while critically ill patients seemed never to go to the ICU but stay in the ER, intubated.

The only medical show I (former RN) thought depicted hospital life somewhat realistically was St Elsewhere. Not for the medical details, but for the frequent sense if chaos and the occasional super bizarre cases.

The problem with St. Elsewhere is that, other than surgery residents, residents seemed to be all of some undifferentiated general specialty that dealt with everything.

Of course. All wrong medically in many ways.(Auschlander the longest-lived terminal liver Ca ever!). But otherwise, there were lots of similarities--at the time I was working in a public hospital that served most of the area indigents. Much rang true.

Scrubs- lots of medical dramas could learn a lot from its depiction of hospital life.
