In a recent article by Torsten Engelbrecht (main author of Virus Mania), Kelly Brogan, Andrew Kaufman and Magdalene Taylor, old virus denialist memes from the days of HIV/AIDS are resurrected. They retorically ask: Is HIV to AIDS what SARS-CoV-2 is to COVID? (answer : YES). 1/npic.twitter.com/GYjT3jy5dO

HIV deniers have existed in two varieties: those who deny that HIV causes AIDS (Peter Duesberg comes to mind), but acknowledge the existence of the (harmless) HIV virus, and those who deny there is a HIV virus in the first place (Stefan Lanka) - or any other virus. 2/n

We see the same ideas pop up again in our times of COVID. Where science believe SARS-CoV-2 is a dangerous virus, lockdown skeptics argue it is relatively harmless. And some radical virus denialists believe this virus just doesn't exist - for the same reasons they denied HIV. 3/n

The strategy of these virus denialists is always the same: 1. question the reliability of electron microscope photos of the virus, 2. question the reliability of the thousands of viral genomes that have been assembled, and 3. question COVID or AIDS as a single disease. 4/n

It is true that electron microscopic photos can be ambiguous, and it takes expertise to interpret them. But we can't jump from the fact that viruses sometimes look like cell particles to the conclusion that they are the same thing, i.e. viruses are beneficial exosomes. 5/n

As to the reliability of viral genomes, virus denialists consistently misunderstand and misrepresent whole genome sequencing, as an arbitrary process of digital construction. WGS is actually a highly sophisticated field of science that takes years of effort and study. 6/n

As to the many-faced nature of COVID-19 (and AIDS), this may be quite true, but there are theoretical reasons to believe that a single virus (SARS-CoV-2 or HIV) can cause so many different bodily ailments, something which is consistently overlooked by these virus denialists. 7/n

While the '90 may have been a time when electro-microscopic and whole genome sequence technology was still in its infancy, these days that is no longer the case. The existence of viruses is no longer determined by taking pictures of them, but by sequencing their full genomes. 8/n

It is remarkable that modern day virus denialists seem to know all about how science should really be done, how viruses should be isolated and so on and at the same time they lack the most basic expertise when it comes to current science. They are somehow stuck in times past. 9/n

I've written before about how germ theory denial is at the core of alternative medicine and the antivaccine movement—and now among #COVID19 cranks.https://sciencebasedmedicine.org/germ-theory-denial-in-the-age-of-the-covid-19-pandemic/ …

Yes, I loved that piece, especially how you included my research on Andrew Kaufman's devious attempt to co-opt James Hildreth and his work on HIV as a Trojan exosome. The blog series THE CORONA CONSPIRACY has now been completed in 30 parts.
