Right, I think that's the sort of thing a diligent editor should catch, but Singal just seems to be deliberately trying to rack up a tally of minor errors to distract from the huge problems with Shrier's book.

Indeed. He's weaponizing pedantry to an extent that I've never seen before, but even by antivaxxers.

And it really seems to have the same effect: there's a number of even more contestable claims - like his denial that Shrier characterizes trans people writ large as mentally ill - that get buried under the torrent of hairsplitting.

I think he's taking the denialist technique of misusing falsus in uno, falsus in omnibus to a ridiculous extreme.https://respectfulinsolence.com/2019/11/20/falsus-in-uno-falsus-in-omnibus-dichotomous/ …

I'm gobsmacked by anybody defending misquoting. Words matter. If that's not what she said, what is the intent in putting it in quotes? Speaking of pedantic, by focusing this discussion as if that's a primary error that @jessesingal found, it distracts from the real problems.

This is a strange defense given what else Jesse has gotten completely wrong in responding to critics of Shrier.

Alexander—CRT Opponents Oppose Academic Freedom Retweeted Merkin Muffley

Or, I guess, critics of other GC people. My memory’s shit trying to remember the relevant people from like a week ago. But this is pretty straightforwardly inaccurate.https://twitter.com/MerkinMuffley5/status/1414338330368647172 …

Alexander—CRT Opponents Oppose Academic Freedom added,

As we’ve seen, to dispute Hall’s claim that, as they summarize it, “gender-affirming [medical] interventions are risky or harmful” for youth, Novella and Gorski mention a fair number of studies of adult transition outcomes that do not bear directly on this question, for reasons I laid out in the introduction to this article.

I believe the only point in their article where they cite medical outcome research specific to trans youth is when they write:
Further, Dr. Hall’s review creates the impression that gender-affirming interventions are risky or harmful, but to support that narrative she distorts the evidence. She states:

Suicide is common, but there is evidence that factors other than gender dysphoria may be causing the suicidal ideation, and there is evidence that affirmation does not ameliorate mental health problems. In one study of adult transsexuals, there was a rise in suicidality after sex reassignment surgery.
      Merkin Muffley @MerkinMuffley5
Seriously this is wild. Novella and Gorski cite evidence on adult transition outcomes in direct response to Hall's explicit claim about adult transition outcomes. The bulk of this article is dedicated to demanding that someone just make up more reasonable positions for Hall. pic.twitter.com/QxyTmhf7jN

“Words matter” is not a strange defense. Someone getting things wrong doesn’t relieve the responsibility of publishers to get it right. It’s not a game. There aren’t points for dunking back and forth. If we’re not holding the “experts” accountable - who will?

Not Singal, which is the point. I can’t help but shield my eye from the backdrop to this when you say that, his glaringly shameful defense of the sexologist “experts” who were engaging in conversion therapy for decades against gay and GNC children.

No, you've changed the point. My point always has been that SBM should get it right. I should have left Jesse out of it because then he becomes the target. What he got wrong, doesn't change what he got right.

We corrected the errors. However, correcting those quote errors doesn't mean that we don't recognize what Singal is doing. We can do both. And with that my bedtime approaches. 🙄
