Judging from the comments from @lecarnardnoir on yesterday's @ScienceBasedMed post, it looks as though it's time to remind people of how transphobes are misrepresenting my words about Lupron from 15 years ago.https://twitter.com/gorskon/status/1412139916260253702 …

Sastra disappoints me. Does she remember the *rationale* used by Mark and David Geier for treating autistic children with Lupron? If she did, she might not have made such a cringeworthy comment.🙄🤦🏻‍♂️ 1/ https://twitter.com/S_h_e_e_n_a_/status/1412108030313914370 …

Amusingly, Andy says that I've "been silent" about this. Look at the date of the quoted Tweet. Two weeks ago.🙄

I worry for Andy, He has been such a stalwart defender of science for many years, but this trans thing seems to have tipped him over the edge. Its all he tweets about now.

Yeah, it's really, really sad to me. Back when I was an up-and-coming blogger, I looked up to Andy as an example of how to do it right. I just don't know what's happened to him—and a lot of my former skeptical heroes.

What I keep asking myself about my now former skeptical heroes: Have they changed? Or were they *always* like this and I just didn't see it then? Or maybe I've changed and they haven't. I've been thinking about this a lot lately.

The answer is that transphobia (or indeed any unacknowledged prejudice) poisons thinking

It's not just transphobia, though. It's misogyny. It's even racism.

i think the trans stuff with kids is new and poorly understood, so it’s not surprising that people are getting overheated. It’s one of those things solved by time.

I think you are experiencing rationalization over rationality in both directions. William Bernstein said it better, "human "rationality" consists a fragile lid perilously balanced on the bubbling cauldron of artifice and self-delusions..."

Could be mild Nobel's Disease. Learned confidence from expertise in one area, plus expansion into areas they don't understand. But also don't forget how easy a lot of skeptical topics are if one merely takes time to read and isn't pre-tainted by specific bias.

Transphobia is like the canary in the skeptical coal mine, I think. It reveals an array of bigotries and biases that may be undetectable in other circumstances, where the targets are better protected and visible

I think all people have blind spots. Even among the very best skeptics. Who are not immune to psychological biases we all have. Basically they are human. Probably started anti trans and then went to confirm it.
