We'd have reached 70% vaccinated a long time ago if instead of censoring anti-vaxers, social media platforms allowed them to use their platform on condition they publicly debate people who actually know the data and are actually able to debate.

I respectfully disagree. The most important antivaxxers - including RFK, Bigtree, Wakefield, and now Weinstein - are still very active in social media. I've watched their movement grow over the years. The recent toothless FB bans didn't make or break their appeal.

And you can't beat a person who is all appeal to emotion with facts. If you could, these people would have been crushed a decade ago.

Yep. This is the discredited hypothesis that denialism is about not having enough information or not understanding the information and that it can be countered just by providing scientifically accurate information. This approach rarely works.

What's the basis for discrediting it? Is there data or is it a strong intuition?

There are data. I will loop @MarkHoofnagle into the convo, as he is more familiar with the data than I am.

Yes, in the NAS recently wrote the book on effective science communication and specifically addresses the information deficit model. It does not review it favorably of course. https://books.google.com/books?hl=en&lr=&id=2ICPDgAAQBAJ&oi=fnd&pg=PR1&ots=iz2Oc3tcNP&sig=aWgfJLAa2gHCc2ZAKib0ZHbavlo#v=onepage&q&f=false …pic.twitter.com/yRKYqhcYuj

I would chose as an example of how to do it right, the lit from Cook and Lewandowsky addresses effective tactics against disinformation, and no, the answer is not just more information. But here would be a good start.https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/1529100612451018 …
