It won't die because it's an antivax trope that goes way back. I've been dealing with it as long as I've been countering antivaccine disinformation. It hasn't died in at least 20 years. Why would it die now?https://twitter.com/GYamey/status/1411254993211043841 …

“Natural herd immunity” is in the news again (I thought we’d moved beyond this nonsense, but here we are). So I thought I might repost this piece I wrote for TIME magazine on the topic 9 months ago. It’s a zombie idea that simply refuses to die. Ugh. https://time.com/5900024/covid-19-herd-immunity-dangerous/ …

Well, here in the UK our crazy ass government is *actively pursuing it* in schools! No mitigations at all - no masks, no ventilation measures, no distancing, no reduced class sizes - and they're refusing to vaccinate under 18s!

The simplest way I can think of to explain the absurdity of "natural herd immunity" is to point out that it means "almost everyone catches the disease." That's not protection; that's surrender.

Natural herd immunity mean uncontrolled spread and more illness and death.

In Brazil the government is also pursuing this nonsense. They didn't buy all the vaccines they could, refuse to use and recommend masks and refused to do any lockdowns. The result is more than half a million dead in a relatively young population and the virus still going strong.

I think what’s preventing our herd immunity is our lack of grazing.
