Is it also reasonable to think that authoritarian societies might have a different attitude to handling the media than others? Regardless of the topic?

I'd expect people in an authoritarian country to self censor.

I don’t know if it’s restricted to authoritarian regimes. Can’t imagine if the initial outbreak were in the US and people demanded labs turn over their documents and data to foreign nations, they would get a particularly different response.

Plus, it’s the Chinese government it’s native reflex is to cover even the most picayune things up. The dog catcher could have picked up a licensed dog and the government would cover it up.
