Basically, a lot of scientists mistakenly think that debating a crank should be easy because they have science on their side. But "live public debates" are about rhetoric far more than they are about facts, reason, and science.
There are exceptions. For instance, Steve Novella demolished Julian Whitaker nine years ago on vaccines. I think you'll get gish galloped regardless of how well you understand the content matter. They're not there for honest debate so there is literally no way to debate them honestly.
