Correct. Even though there is some plausibility for #LabLeak, the arguments being made for #LabLeakTheory currently bear all of the hallmarks of a conspiracy theory.https://twitter.com/thebirdmaniac/status/1404550561232531471 …

Calling lab leak a conspiracy theory is still accurate. Proponents rarely stop at saying it is merely plausible. Without any concrete evidence they posit coverups and conspiracies by various combinations of the Wuhan Institute of Virology, Chinese government, and US researchers

I'm happy with that as long as the virology community is quietly rethinking creating new viruses just to explore the possible.

The main problem is that people tend to associate "lab leak" with "man made" which are on two whole different levels of gravity.

There's a reason for that. The most vocal #LabLeak proponents pretty much*all* claim that #SARSCoV2 was engineered and couldn't possibly have arisen naturally. They also use risibly bad molecular biology to make their case.

Not to mention, if it ends up being true, it just makes it a true conspiracy theory.

Old enough to remember the media obsession with the origin of HIV in the 1990s. It didn’t seem driven by dispassionate scientific inquiry. Just pointed fingers at Africans and gay men. These conspiracy theorists want to blame Chinese ppl for covid raging out of control in 🇺🇸

Correct. There *is*, of course, a small chance that they might be accidentally correct, but it's a very small chance and not worth holding back criticizing their appeals to bad science and conspiracy theories for.

But the problem with that is that suppressing the idea or dismissing it without consideration is what fuels and strengthens the conspiracy theory. Best approach is an open, transparent investigation and discussion of origins.
