Yep. #LabLeak is *possible*, just not very likely.https://twitter.com/drg1985/status/1404009534226632710 …

Despite breathless reporting, Wuhan lab-leak narratives on origin of #COVID19 are supremely unlikely. Attributing blame for pandemics has an ugly, unedifying history, & only emboldens Conspiracy theorists - me in @guardian today on #LabLeak #LabLeakTheory https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2021/jun/13/newly-respectable-wuhan-lab-theory-remains-fanciful …

Were they working on this strain in that lab? If so I think a lab leak is quite possible given reports that the protocols there were sub-par. It makes sense that China would capture and study any threatening zoonoses they found in their territory, to protect their peeps. No evil.

My personal 'conspiracy theory' is that they had a small spontaneous outbreak (I heard a group of miners got it?) and brought the virus in to study because they wanted to be prepared if it ever got into people again. Completely reasonable course of action. Lab accidents happen.

These esotericists do not understand that a "It cannot be ruled out that ..." is not sufficient, but that the probability must also be named on the basis of well-founded data. Otherwise we will soon have a general helmet obligation due to the "possibility of meteorite impacts" ..

The bad part is the right wing media just decided to push this back into the conversation - absolutely zero new evidence has been found to indicate lab leak - as you say it’s possible, but absent new evidence it shouldn’t be getting coverage.

Would knowing it was a lab leak instead of a natural source have made the powers that be at the time change how they reacted?

Yup - btw, I cited your excellent account (and a few other folks) in the copy I submitted but that bit didn't make it past editor in published version, I'm guessing cut for length - apologies for that. I see the @mbeisen "bullshit" quote made it though.. 😄

Why is it so politically charged as an issue in the US? It’s a purely factual question (to which we may never know the answer).
