This may not be a popular opinion but couldn’t D’s and R’s compromise on voter ID by requiring it, but making ID’s free and very easy to get? Add in mandatory 2 weeks of early voting including weekends and after business hours?

The problem is the groups pushing voter ID don't really want people most likely to not have ID's to actually have them. Else they would be including legislation to do what you suggest

For sure. I don’t doubt that many lawmakers want people to forget or not have ID’s to vote with. Hence the compromise to include funding for cheap, easy ID’s and mandated extended voting hours. I’m sure it’s easier said than done but seems worth a shot

It won’t work. Excluding people least likely to have the proper ID is the *entire* point of these bills requiring IDs to vote.

I understand it’s probably complete fantasy & far more nuanced than I can articulate in a tweet. I just think there are discussions & negotiations that could be made stemming from these points. Red states will keep pushing voter ID. Federal funds to help ppl obtain ID might help?

They don’t WANT compromise, they don’t WANT id free and available. They WANT it hard to vote. That’s the POINT. It would be like saying “we’re giving away cookies to anyone named Bobsho Tontonway, and we’re also making it free and easy for everyone to change their name”

They only WANT a few people named Bobsho Tontonway to get cookies, they whole point of making it hard to get a free cookie is that only a select number can get it. If you make it free and easy to be eligible, that defeats their entire purpose.

IDs are already free in every state. You can request an absentee ballot in every state. I believe in every state if you show up without documentation you can cast a provisional ballot.

Even if the ID itself is free there are still numerous costs associated with the prerequisites for obtaining ID, as well as difficulties like travel. There are some places here in TX you have to drive 170 miles to the nearest office. It’s also just not useful in preventing fraud.

That's exactly the game they are playing in certain areas. Shut down or greatly reduce hours in DMV's and town offices in minority and Democratic leaning areas to make it harder to get the required ID

Yup. And then decrease the hours and number of locations for voting, making it necessary to travel further and increasing the chances that the "wrong" people can't vote because their working hours preclude it.
