I'm an atheist who hasn't felt comfortable in any atheist community for years. This sort of thing is exactly the reason why.https://www.salon.com/2021/06/05/how-the-new-atheists-merged-with-the-far-right-a-story-of-intellectual-grift-and-abject-surrender/ …

It is? What about it is?

I found it superficial and tribal. Of course these three figures are v flawed but they also have a lot to offer and to describe them as ‘grifters’ is silly. I’d be interested in a serious critique of their ideas but this kind of dog whistle stuff is just Breitbart for the Left.

Having observed these figures for 15 years now, I found the article, sadly, spot on, particularly about Sam Harris and Peter Boghossian and James Lindsay (who really have gone deep into the rabbit hole of right wing anti-"woke" conspiracy theories, embarrassingly so).

To suggest Pinker, Dawkins and Harris have “merged with the far right” is politically obtuse though, whatever you may think of their stances on some issues. I think there’s a sense of betrayal that causes this kind of hysterical overstatement.

I note that you don't deny that Boghossian and Lindsay have merged with the far right, given that you left them out. You're definitely wrong about Harris. He's fully gone rightwing grifter. Dawkins is just clueless and amplifies anti-"woke" and anti-trans talking points.

Your caricature of Dawkins is way off, so I’m bound to be dubious of your assessment of the others, whom you’re no doubt more familiar with than I am. (I’ve heard a fair number of Harris podcasts and not noticed far right tendencies, although the topics weren’t political.)

Read the article. The examples chosen for Boghossian and Lindsay, at minimum, are quite representative of what they routinely say these days.

I read it (!) but don’t trust it to be accurate or fair because it isn’t in the areas I’m familiar with. I agree with you that too many public figures are going down the culture war rabbit hole. I just think this article is down there too. It’s rehashing the same old clichés.

Well, then, I'll snitch tag @xriskology, who wrote it. You can hash it out with him if his article offends you so much.

He’s already liked my comment saying how much I hated his article. I thought this was very cool of him (or a mistake) and have followed him as a result. I like reading things I disagree with.
