Relman himself says that he doesn't believe that #SARSCoV2 came from a lab and seems utterly oblivious and unconcerned about how he has promoted the related narratives of conspiracy theorists.

Of course he doesn't. No one responsible "believes" the virus came from an accidental lab leak or "believes" the virus originated from natural spillover. But it is a possibility and he wants it investigated.

And he's obviously aware that there are conspiracy theorists and assholes seizing the hypothesis.pic.twitter.com/fG55lXvNL5

Relman is part of the disinformation problem, a useful idiot for the conspiracy theorists.

The way he tries to duck responsibility for feeding
#LabLeak conspiracy theories that lead to attacks on scientists sickens me.1 reply 0 retweets 1 like -

This is pretty disappointing to hear from you, tbh. I learned a lot about combatting quackery from your blog. The continuing conflation of all variants of an accidental lab leak with conspiracy theories is deleterious to science and trust in scientists.

Personally, I’m disappointed in how many self-identified “skeptics” have so enthusiastically embraced such a scientifically implausible hypothesis as
#LabLeakTheory as way more plausible than it is, all based on speculation and no good evidence.

Claims of scientific implausibility are, prima facie, wrong unless you think natural spillover is also scientifically implausible. One variant of LLH is bat->human researcher. That's natural spillover, but with a spelunking scientist, not a farmer.

Anyways, neither Relman nor I have "embraced" the accidental lab leak hypothesis. It's a possible viral origin and it should be looked into. I frame no hypotheses.

I never said Relman had “embraced”
#LabLeak, just that he’s been a useful idiot for the conspiracy theorists with his letter. You, OTOH, sure could have fooled me, given how vigorously you’ve been defending its plausibility and your “disappointment” in me for doubting it.1 reply 0 retweets 0 likes
Basically, Relman has been “just asking questions.” Without hard evidence, that’s basically what #LabLeak is, JAQing off.

I'm not disappointed in you or anyone for doubting it. I doubt it! That's what you do with hypotheses! I literally just tweeted about compelling impetus for natural spillover, because, again, I'm interested in understanding where the virus came from.

Tarring the need for an inquiry into a global pandemic as the "just asking questions" of pseudoscience/conspiracy theorists is a recipe for disaster. Surely we can agree that it is, in fact, important to find the virus' origins?
