In the early 1990s, the diagnostic criteria for autism were broadened. Subsequent to that, screening programs were implemented in schools. Here's a hint: If you don't look for something, you will find a lot less of it. If you look harder for something, you will find more of it.1/ https://twitter.com/AQuantumCat1/status/1399982466790793221 …

"More of it" will include cases mild cases that might not have been picked up absent screening. Similarly, more resources were put into autism screening and treatment, which meant that children with an autism spectrum diagnosis could access resources that weren't there before. 2/

This post is three years old, but it's the same story that antivaxxers have been pulling at least as long as I've been paying attention to them (close to two decades). 3/https://sciencebasedmedicine.org/autism-prevalence-increases-to-1-in-59-and-antivaxers-lose-it-yet-again/ …

Basically, when you take into account changes in diagnostic criteria and other confounders, it turns out that the prevalence of autism hasn't changed in decades. 4/4https://sciencebasedmedicine.org/autism-prevalence-unchanged-in-20-years/ …

Beyond this, much of the narrative of “epidemic” is deeply ableist and offensive! It mirrors horrific eugenics movements of the last and the gay-moral-panic of the 1980s-1990s as more young people came out. It’s grotesquely offensive.

As someone who is on the spectrum, and who comes from a family with many ND folks, there are seriously problematic assumptions made in all of these studies about how inaccessible diagnosis / childhood mental health is in this country outside of urban areas / school systems.

I’m curious then, what was the number for 4 decades of children w/o language, stimming, self injurious, no emotional affect? This severity of Autism would not have been unnoticed. What was their diagnosis if not Autism?

A few comments: 1) Many were diagnosed with “mental retardation.” 2) Studies on stimming (aka stereotypy) do not reveal it to be unique to ASD. 3) Studies on #selfinjury show it is largely a learned behavior.

I'm autistic and wasn't diagnosed until adulthood even though I went to special needs schools. I also wasn't vaccinated because my mum was into homeopathic nonsense. I had measles instead. My 70+ mum now won't get her Covid vaccine and I'm very glad I got both doses of Pfizer
