It also amuses me how often the very same people who used to accuse those of us who followed public health guidelines on masking of being “smug” and “superior” are now smugly and with an air of superiority referring those who continue to wear masks indoors as” living in fear.”

The sheer number of County's in Florida that look like this, says it's going to be a while before people feel safe, vaccinated or not. First shot 23.06% Second shot 17.49%

And how many of those "I don't live in fear" types carry a fully automatic rifle with them into Wal-Mart "for protection"?

Excellent point.

I’m a severe asthmatic who was on a ventilator in the 1980s. COVID-19 could put me on one again and that’s a hard no. I’m still wearing my mask. My big change since being vaccinated is I’ve stopped double-masking, & I’m not wearing N95s. It’s nice to just wear a cotton mask!

Same situation, severe asthmatic, double vaxxed. Per new CDC guidance, I don’t see a statistical benefit to wearing a mask except in crowded areas, and tend to wear it otherwise only when companies demand that I join them in their “reasonable” (unscientific) caution.

the irony that they're afraid of a mask is lost on them.

I'm a grown-up now. I don't have to live in fear. I happily cross the street without looking both ways, because what's the point of being big and strong otherwise? *splat*

The whole "living in fear" thing is just a lazy way of trying to paint the other side as irrational without having to engage in the actual content of their arguments. It also connects to a toxic version of masculinity that portrays engaging in high risk activities as most manly.

Having said that, being fully vaccinated I don't wear a mask if the store says it's optional. I'm also not bothered by others wearing masks and I maintain social distance from them as courtesy. And if a store still requires masks then I put one on without complaint. Not hard
