It makes me wonder if they become so used to sycophancy and deference that they just can’t deal when faced with criticism by those who recognize what they’re saying for the BS that it is. They falsely think freedom of speech means freedom from criticism for that speech.

Personally I think there can be elements of both. Sure, the whining can be performative, but in the case of, for example, a Nobel laureate like Levitt or a hugely published investigator like Ioannidis I think there’s also an element of, “How *dare* you rubes criticize *me*?”
