I recently discussed how naïve we provaxxers were pre-pandemic. We used to assume that vaccines were victims of their own success and if antivaxxers only saw the mass suffering and death a vaccine-preventable disease (which #COVID19 is now) can cause, they’d stop being antivax.https://twitter.com/JHowardBrainMD/status/1398648680396230661 …

My thinking- Pre-covid: people are antivaccine largely because they never saw what these diseases can do. Now: people’s identities are more important to them than their lives. https://twitter.com/karenpaulscbc/status/1398623202226491396 …

The thing is: they still largely haven't seen what these diseases do. Severe COVID-19 that puts people in ICUs is largely absent from the public eye. PASC is largely invisible too. So I honestly don't think that this disproves it.

People in India are seeing firsthand what #COVID19 does first hand, and antivaccine sentiment is still rife there.

You're talking about the "What I see is all there is" heuristic, and I agree that it's powerful. But there is also motivated reasoning going on as well as a good deal of whistling in the dark. Willfull blindness. The monster isn't there if I don't look at it.

While I'm at it, ditto Brazil, where people are seeing what #COVID19 does first hand...
