I recently discussed how naïve we provaxxers were pre-pandemic. We used to assume that vaccines were victims of their own success and if antivaxxers only saw the mass suffering and death a vaccine-preventable disease (which #COVID19 is now) can cause, they’d stop being antivax.https://twitter.com/JHowardBrainMD/status/1398648680396230661 …

My thinking- Pre-covid: people are antivaccine largely because they never saw what these diseases can do. Now: people’s identities are more important to them than their lives. https://twitter.com/karenpaulscbc/status/1398623202226491396 …

We were hugely and painfully mistaken. Mass suffering and death due to #COVID19 made antivaxxers even more antivaccine and opposed to any #CovidVaccine.🤷🏻‍♂️

The same is true of climate change denialists, and it will be even more true when it impacts them more personally, ironically enough.

Only because Trump called Covid a hoax.

No, it's not because of that. That certainly didn't help, but the #COVID19 crankery and ramping up of the antivaccine movement happened largely independent of Trump.

Anti-vaxxers are no different from the activists opposed to GM crops. GM crops improve food security, reducing malnourishment and starvation, yet opposition is firmly entrenched. Death and suffering has no effect on activists.

And allegorically to the anti-gmo leaders, who never had to suffer a day's worth of hunger in their lives, the anti-vax leaders all have good access to medical care they can afford and (i bet you) most of them probably got vaccinated themselves!

In fairness I know some people who had never been vaccinated and their kids had never been either & they all got the Covid vaxx. So this pandemic is changing some minds. Those who still don’t get it? We can’t help those people

I don’t have a survey to back me up, but I think most of the COVID-19 antivaxxers are also COVID-19 seriousness deniers. I believe that if COVID-19 had a fatality rate more like smallpox, there would almost certainly be many fewer antivaxxers.

Given my experience over the pandemic, I'd take that bet and be 95% certain that I'd win it, expecting to hear: "You have a 70% chance of surviving. It's nothing!"

I got the impression that some Covid vaccine sceptics would be happy to receive a traditional vaccine, it’s the new vaccine platforms they are wary of
