Something interesting I've noticed teaching is Gen Z just does not use Microsoft Word, period. When you ask them to submit .doc files they're all converting them from Google Docs or Pages.

My theory: Microsoft Word is an enterprise product and the only reason us oldies are so good at it is because our employers forced us to use it. People gravitate to products that solve their needs and one of those needs for gen z is not paying a subscription to write a paper.

Microsoft Word is now $70 per year, no option to buy media upfront and no option to split it from the rest of Office 365 Yeah, why don't the kids use it casually, I wonder why

Many universities that use Exchange/Office 365 for their email also provide five Office 365 licenses per student (and faculty and employee—basically anyone with a university email account) for free. My university does this. So does my cancer center. I'm swimming in free licenses.
