About that "study" on masks in the fringe speculative journal Medical Hypotheses...besides its being utter BS, its author Baruch Vainshelboim doesn't even work for @Stanford or the Palo Alto VA! https://apnews.com/article/fact-checking-629043235973 …

But the study isn't alone in its findings. There are several similar. The CDC's own Emerging Infectious Diseases published a very credible metanalysis that came to essentially the same conclusion and it was quickly repudiated as well for political, not scientific, reasons.

Could you drop the mega-analysis link?

Thanks. Pulled up the article — several comments, they found a relative risk of 0.78 for face masks (protective), just not significant. Also the studies in the analysis included dorm students (are they actually wearing masks?).

But agree w/ their conclusion on masks: “Proper use of face masks is essential because improper use might increase the risk for transmission (39). Thus, education on the proper use and disposal of used face masks, including hand hygiene, is also needed”https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7181938/ …

Here's a much more recent review article that supports the use of masks for #COVID19.https://www.pnas.org/content/118/4/e2014564118 …

Seriously, citing meta-analyses and review articles on the use of masks versus #COVID19 originally published in May 2020 tells me you're likely cherry picking. There are many far more recent studies and reviews to cite

Sure but there are few that look at actual RCTs rather than mechanistic or computer modelled studies. The preponderance of controlled clinical studies show little or no benefit to use of masks at the community level. Somebody is cherry picking but I don't think it is I.

Newer doesn't mean better. The positive studies here virtually all are presented using weasel words: "could potentially", "may help". The evidence for "some" protection in healthcare settings is good, but even there it is limited. In a community setting, where not just...

...compliance but proper technique, effective material, etc. are a crapshoot negates most benefit that might occur in more controlled settings. Moreover, exposure risk is much higher in healthcare settings. If people choose to wear masks, great, but requiring them is unsupported.
