Geert Vanden Bossche recently published an open letter warning of global catastrophe due to mass #COVID19 vaccination producing deadly variants. His argument sounds a lot like an argument Andrew Wakefield once made for MMR. And then there's the grift.https://respectfulinsolence.com/2021/03/17/geert-vanden-bossche-is-to-covid-19-vaccines-as-andrew-wakefield-is-to-mmr/ …

So, is Bossche claiming that if we don't vaccinate, there be no deadly variants? Somehow, letting the virus have it's way prevents mutations? Huh??

That would appear to be an implication of what he's saying, with the subtext that "most of the spread is asymptomatic," which is a variation of the "coronavirus isn't dangerous to most people" trope.

I asked @GVDBossche exactly this question but no response. Some of his followers are now blaming the vaccine trials for the recent variants. It really is dangerous nonsense in my non-expert opinion.

The claim that vaccines are like antibiotics with bacteria, selecting for resistant variants, is an oldie/moldy antivaccine claim. The fact is, for vaccines against viruses, vaccines selecting for resistant variants has been rare.

That being said, in a pandemic with tens of millions of infections the sheer number of infections make an uncommon event (selection for vaccine-resistant variants) more likely.

This is why we should be doing everything possible in addition to vaccination to decrease the number of infections and not be giving up on public health interventions other than mass vaccination yet.
