I was always a bit skeptical that fomites were a major mechanism of #COVID19 transmission. It didn't stop me from being just as paranoid about handwashing, hand sanitizers, and touching anything with my bare hands as everyone else a year ago.https://twitter.com/bmj_latest/status/1382476314133811209 …

"It is now clear that SARS-CoV-2 transmits mostly between people at close range through inhalation. " Why does it matter and how should this shape our efforts to control the pandemic? http://ow.ly/XHaZ50EoFtu  @linseymarr

I'm not saying that handwashing/sanitizing *isn't* very important, just that the sheer paranoia that was instilled at the beginning of the pandemic was probably excessive.

I guess the key is in the numbers- in some locations such as supermarkets the number of touches could make small probabilities significant in infection risk- wheras inside the home it is probably still an insignificant risk.

I remember reading that this handwashing paranoia unexpectedly led to a sharp drop in stomach flu cases in Moscow. The effect seemed to amount to "people who neglected washing hands in general started taking it seriously"

Yeah I was never on the wash down groceries or boxes bandwagon. I was just let it sit untouched for a bit. People giving themselves extra work and anxiety.

The spraying of the ground & deep cleaning as effective (unproven) strategies 🤔🤦‍♂️

I vote not paranoid enough. I'm a truck driver, you do not want to know the number of men that use a urinal or toilet then walk out into the store w/o using soap & water or sanitizer. Then they shop, picking things up & putting them back. & this includes traveling families.

Basically we rolled out all the flu prevention recommendations because we had no idea what to actually tell people; that's the read I get on this.

does handwashing even help with the flu? wouldn't a mask have always made more sense? I mean for sure handwashing helps for fecal-oral route stuff, but now I'm kinda doubtful about the rest given how quick people were to suggest hand washing for COVID-19.
