This explains a lot. I like to refer to it as the cult of the brave maverick doctor. @AAPSonline epitomizes this attitude that EBM-based doctors are “sheep” following the “herd.”https://twitter.com/JHowardBrainMD/status/1382527488258146304 …

I’ve been thinking about this precovid tweet and how it explains a mindset- people who don’t want to do what’s necessary right. That might be dull. Instead, they want to do what makes them feel special and different. https://twitter.com/ZDoggMD/status/1202691720661463040 …

Here’s a hint. Andrew Wakefield is a brave maverick doctor. So is Scott Atlas. Stanislaw Burzynski is a brave maverick doctor too. Jay Bhattacharya of #GreatBarringtonDeclaration has revealed himself to be a brave maverick doctor. 2/

Brave mavericks are contrarians. Occasionally (very occasionally) they can be correct, but far more often they are not. They often have a tendency to stray further and further from God science in pursuit of being a maverick. 3/

That’s because brave maverick doctors think of themselves as better than the rest of the herd, more creative, more “independent” thinkers. They hate any constraints on the godlike autonomy of a doctor, such as evidence-based guidelines. They think they don’t need them! 4/

Basically, brave maverick doctors value being apart from the herd more than they value science. Unfortunately, even during normal times the news media LOVE brave maverick doctors. During the #COVID19 #pandemic, this lionization of such contrarians has caused great harm. 5/5

Correction: From GOOD science. No doubt a brave maverick will have much to say about that autocorrect typo in this Tweet as a Freudian slip of some sort😂🤦🏻‍♂️ 6/6https://twitter.com/gorskon/status/1382641435921502208 …
