It can’t. This is the same kind of messaging debacle that happened two decades ago when thimerosal was removed from childhood vaccines “out of an overabundance of caution,” even though there was no evidence that it caused autism. 1/https://twitter.com/MattGertz/status/1381933962445094916 …

I am extremely skeptical of the ability of public messaging to disaggregate "the J&J vaccine is under review as a precaution" from "the J&J vaccine is not safe and the others may not be either" in the minds of normal people. An incredibly crucial, high-stakes test for the press.

Far from increasing confidence in childhood vaccines, that decision only served to lead antivaxxers to conclude that their fears were justified and that there had been a coverup. It only feed the “mercury in vaccines cause autism” conspiracy theory. 2/

Worse, it gave antivaxxers a line of argument that seemed credible: Why would they remove thimerosal from vaccines if it really weren’t harmful? It took years to shed the impression that thimerosal-containing vaccines were unsafe. 3/3

One last thought: I appreciate that FDA is between a rock and a hard place with this issue. If it didn’t issue a pause, antivaxxers would weaponize that too. 4/4

If they didn't hold the J&J vaccine to assess the safety signal, the anti-vaxxers would be able to say "The authorities knew about the 6 blood clots, but they did nothing."

Damned if they do, damned if they don’t. I am reassured that they are paying so much attention to the vaccines and how they impact people weeks and months after they receive them.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking about. The FDA really was in a no-win situation here. I do wish they'd stuck to the science and said "The risk to public health is greater if we stop vaccinating" but I understand :(

Between my wife having a vasovagal reaction after the J&J vaccine yesterday (passed out in a store) and this today my mom has been texting non-stop for me to cancel my appt for today. Walgreens just cancelled it anyway. But I'm still getting whichever one I can get first.

I suspect a part of the FDA’s thinking was that there are other vaccines available for women between the ages of 18 and 50. In a rational world, they would just recommend that those folks get a different vaccine. In our world, well, we will see…

Issuing a warning would have handed antivaxxers a butter knife as a weapon. Pausing the vaccine hands antivaxxers an Apache helicopter armed with Hellfire missiles.
