David Gorski, MD, PhD added,
So what's the obsession with ivermectin, and is there anything actually probative there? I'm highly skeptical of it, but I figure it can't hurt to ask someone better than me at this.
From an interview with a local physician using it (w/lots of other meds, in the kitchen-sink i-MATH+ protocol), their whole protocol gets above-average results, and it's safe in a controlled hosp. setting, so while it's no magic cure/preventative it may be helping somewhat.
Based on, of course, no solid clinical trial evidence.
True! They dropped HCQ after evidence *against* it was clear. But when evidence was middling at best, with no active reason *not* to include it as part of their cocktail they were keeping it up.
(Basically, they had relatively good results with lots of stuff used together, notably including steroids before those were universal, and before there were really *any* clinical trials, and then went with "we'll stick with what we've been doing until there's a reason not to.")
(I'm not defending or recommending its use, just explaining why some physicians, separate from the "it's a miraculous preventative and cure" people, might be using it.)
Look, I could sort of understand and even sympathize with such shenanigans a year ago, when there were no data. Not any more. We have actual data now.
