Why are you surprised? This is what's been happening to climate science for at least a couple of decades.

Yeah, I am reading this now, to understand the playbook used by the American Institute for Economic Research & its Great Barrington Declaration. I didn’t expect the playbook to be used in the face of the world’s worst pandemic in 100 years, but I clearly was very wrong on that!pic.twitter.com/GORVaozfeD

Yup. It was the playbook developed by tobacco companies, which is why I always chuckle when I see antivaxxers try to refer to vaccine science as “tobacco science.” Projection at its finest, given he antivaxxers use the same techniques to sow doubt about vaccines.

One thing I genuinely cannot grasp. With the arrival of astoundingly safe, highly efficacious vaccines, why on earth did the American Institute for Economic Research go full on anti-vaxx (see Naomi Wolf’s tweets & the AIER website). And why is GBD pushing vaccine misinformation??

Interesting question. After all, you'd think that a safe and effective vaccine would be appealing to them as a tool to end the pandemic faster without lockdowns or business restrictions, wouldn't you?

I think the issue of why
#GreatBarringtonDeclaration cranks and@aier have gone full anti-#CovidVaccine and now even antivax is simple. It's a matter of invoking the bogeyman of "tyranny." 2/2 replies 7 retweets 29 likes -
Here's what I mean. The whole reason
#GreatBarringtonDeclaration and@aier are so against public health interventions to slow the spread of#COVID19 is based on "freedom" and a resentment of anything that they see infringing on that "freedom," particularly business "freedom." 3/2 replies 5 retweets 27 likes -
A requirement for
#CovidVaccine to be able to end the#COVID19 pandemic is that a large fraction of the population must be vaccinated, sufficient to achieve true herd immunity. There's no way to do that without massive government intervention. 4/1 reply 3 retweets 19 likes -
Indeed, we're seeing the difference now between the Trump administration's rather laissez-faire approach to vaccinating the nation and
@JoeBiden's far more government activist approach. It's like night and day. 5/1 reply 1 retweet 17 likes -
Since
@aier and the#GreatBarringtonDeclaration quacks are very much right wing and oppose expansion of government power, they don't like a solution to the pandemic that requires a huge government effort to administer vaccines. 6/2 replies 3 retweets 23 likes
Add to that the possibility of a #VaccinePassport, and @aier and the cranks lose their minds. While it is true that there are legitimate arguments against #VaccinePassports, legitimate arguments are not what #GreatBarringtonDeclaration flacks are peddling. 7/

The reason
@aier and#GreatBarringtonDeclaration have gone antivax is the same reason they're anti-public health. Public health measures against#COVID19 and herd immunity by vaccination both require massive government interventions to which they are fundamentally opposed. 8/80 replies 11 retweets 51 likesThanks.
