I'd ask, too, why dying is the only consequence in the discussion.

Because they don't believe in any other consequences. I've had several ask "how do you know the organ damage is permanent?" regarding the scarring the virus leaves behind.

For all the talk of "mortality rates" these people also fail to recognize the "recovered" rates...of long term effects in the hospitalized recovered. 18-23% of cases are hospitalized, of those hospitalized >80% have chronic long-term effects, some which are majorly life altering.
