That being said a brief period of electrifying Chicago blues does not stand up so well to someone (me) who has lived and listened in Chicago for the past 35 years.

I’ll agree Clapton’s late 1980s period output (e.g., August and Journeyman) was pretty bleak and that he put out a clunker (Backless) in the late 1970s, but otherwise his post-Derek output was generally solid.
Of course, if you are a Clapton fan, of which there are many. But to me an album like "Under the Cradle" -basically an album of blues cover that had no black people playing on it-is not really breaking any new ground. Solid like you say, and pretty cool.
