there is an epidemic of that type in academia, between believing the US academia is the epicenter of the world, and general lack of humility and power check. thats what you end up with.

Only charlatan scientists "author" more "papers" each year than actual scientists read in a year. (A one-person paper mill always is a red flag for fraudulent authorship and almost always is a red flag for fraudulent content.)

Unfortunately many scientists (unfortunately, both sides) write Covid papers only to support their ideological positions (this is particularly bad in Italy). Of course science is not a neutral ivory tower, but didn't necessarily have to be this way.
