I saw this "live debate" idea backfire live, albeit not in person but over local TV, on David Suzuki when he went up against Phillipe Rushton. It just doesn't work.

(Particularly disappointing because Suzuki already had a national TV show for science promotion and knew the ins-and-outs of communicating with a mass audience... and even he couldn't pull it off.)
