It seems to me that such debates are almost guaranteed to be colossal wastes of time. If reason didn’t lead them to their beliefs, can it lead them out?

yes. because they don't know what they don't know. I'm a prime example. I read Bossche letters/points. And I was worried/concerned etc. But i was able to understand more because I searched out a rebuttal. Not everyone knows to do that, or even will.
