As an aside, I was getting harassed on the Internet for my blog activity 16 years ago, back in the caveman days when smartphones were all Blackberrys, social media was in its infancy, and the harassers had to email my chairman and dean (and me) to harass me. 2/

Then five years ago, internet crank, quack, and conspiracy theorist Mike Adams targeted me with something like 40 libelous articles about me alleging everything from Medicare fraud to malpractice to implications of pedophilia. 3/

Basically, doctors have long suffered for speaking out against antivaxxers, quackery, pseudoscience, and conspiracy theories. It's just that the last decade or so, with the rise of Facebook, Twitter, and other social media, has turbocharged cranks' ability to harass. 4/4

My favorite crank harassment technique these days is the way cranks will flood doctor review sites with fake negative reviews about me. I can always spot the fake reviews, too, as cranks are very predictable (and not particularly clever) about what they say. 5/5

It's the main reason I don't identify myself. I spoke out about something publicly once a few years back. It went viral and my office was bombarded by calls for nearly a month. The lesson I learned was that anonymity is happiness.

I think what hasn’t been noticed apparently is that it’s EVERYONE. Yes, doctors but also: scientists, teachers, liberals, conservatives, minorities, police, politicians, Boy Scouts, religious leaders, etc, etc.
