So @facebook's brain dead algorithm strikes again, locking me (an administrator) out of posting to the @ScienceBasedMed for 24 hours because I posted an article from @oracknows deconstructing a dubious treatment for #COVID19. FB, your #COVID19 misinformation algorithm is 💩.pic.twitter.com/meKK2HTvyB

I’m sorry this happened David. But I’m afraid it’s integral to doing content moderation at scale. Today’s computers cannot say for certain if a post is bad, so they have to make a prediction. With billions of posts, some of those predictions will be wrong—in both directions.

I can see why to you it seems like covid deniers are free to post, while people trying to help are wrongly penalised. But just since February, Facebook has removed an additional 2M posts for containing debunked claims about covid using our technology.

At this scale, we do make mistakes—but these are still a small percentage of cases. That doesn’t make it any less frustrating for you I’m sure. If you’re able, please appeal that decision so it can be reviewed.

Appeal the decision? How the hell do I do that? There’s no way to appeal the decision. None! At least, none that I can find anywhere.🙄🤦🏻‍♂️

So the saga continues. @Facebook apparently reversed the decision——however...pic.twitter.com/6wbDOoldAI

... I’m still banned for 24 hours because @facebook is now flagging a post from July for “hate speech” and saying I posted things that “violated FB’s community standards” more than once. What did I say that was so horrible?pic.twitter.com/2p4PT8BZRH

I’ll tell you what @Facebook flagged for “hate speech.” Way back in July, I posted, “Americans are idiots” in response to a news story about, as I recall, lockdown and antivax protests. FB’s algorithms flagged that for “hate speech,” and that’s why I’m still in FB jail.

I did appeal that one, but @Facebook rejected the appeal. So apparently, to FB, I’m now guilty not just of sharing #COVID19 misinformation, but of “hate speech,” apparently against my fellow Americans.

So, despite having reversed the decision on my supposedly having shared #COVID19 misinformation, FB still views me as having *two instances* of sharing material that “violates its community standards,” not one. (It should be zero.)

Basically, @Facebook’s faith in its algorithms and AI to catch antivax and ##COVID19 misinformation and hate speech is unjustified. Its algorithms stink.
