One of the most annoying denizens of Twitter (to me) is the Twitter nanny who, whenever I quote-Tweet or respond to, for instance, an antivax Tweet in order to refute its misinformation, inevitably shows up in my responses to oh-so-self-righteously scold me for "amplifying" it.

That is the consensus of the most recen debunking handbook 2020. It might only apply to real Mickey-Mouse “myth:fact” structures as were used in original survey. Too much was inferred from that.

You’re right. The boomerang effect isn’t as much of a thing as once supposed. But that isn’t what they’re talking about with quote tweets. It’s the algorithm. It doesn’t discern between “positive” quote tweets and “critical” ones. It all contributes to the metrics of the post.
