I wondered if antivaxxers did this with private practice docs too. They’ve emailed and called my department chair and cancer center director’s office a number of times before to complain about me or try to get me fired.https://twitter.com/DBelardoMD/status/1369856551695966213 …

The real “cancel culture” is that which the wrong try to foist on the factually correct. Fortunately some are protected by institutions that care about accuracy, but the local pressures on a private practice could be a lot bear.

Antivaxxers and cranks poisoned my Google reputation for several years, a problem that didn’t abate until Google tweaked its algorithms to deprioritize quacks.

I suppose I should have not used my recency bias, I’m a big fan of your work, and know what the quacks did to you - trying to get you fired from your faculty position and so forth, based solely upon your own advocacy for truth, before a virus became partisan.

In 2016, Mike Adams published something like 40 libelous posts about me calling me a quack and a pharma shill, not so subtly implying I'm a pedophile, and even accusing me of crimes, with a post saying he'd reported me to the local FBI and urging people to do the same.

Other quacks and antivaxxers published a number of attacks on me then, and some of them ranked high on Google searches. The first few pages of Google searches on my name were dominated by these sorts of articles.

I used to joke that, if I ever needed or wanted to find another job, I'd never be able to do it because as soon as a potential employer Googled my name it'd be all over. They'd say, "We don't need this drama." Unfortunately, that was probably true.

A little appreciated aspect of Google's having tweaked its algorithm a year or two ago to deemphasize unreliable sources and conspiracy sites is that the Google reputation of people like me is a lot better now than it was four or five years ago.

One wonders how much their failure to do so for so long, led the disinformation getting the front seat, as it were.
