As a non-expert, though, isn't this the kind of lead that should be followed up? Maybe most of them don't pan out, but some would, and we are looking for more solutions?

But we don’t know that yet. When you study a true effect, it will also show significance in smaller studies if the effect size is large enough. So it could be true or not. Larger studies are being carried out. I don’t disagree with what you are saying. But haven’t ruled it out.

Your understanding of stats interpretation of data really would benefit from refresher. There are many good articles on reading the medical literature.
