By the time I was born in the early 1960s, old time radio had gasped its last gasp, killed by TV, but many of those shows from the 1940s and 1950s were great. The radio version of Gunsmoke was a revelation to me. "Broadway Is My Beat" had some of the best writing I've ever heard.

I love that show, particularly the Bob Bailey episodes, and, out of those seasons, the one season where each story was in five 15-minute parts broadcast every weeknight. That was peak Johnny Dollar. I still can't figure out why there was never a TV series or movie...
