it is offensive and demoralizing to be put through online training sessions about workplace ethical conduct that should be obvious to a five-year-old is there ANY evidence they work? ridiculous waste of resources

Yes they work When employees behave unethically. The employer can say that it was misconduct by the employee, and offer the training module as evidence

They may not sink in, but they do provide evidence that the individuals were told. Later, if they commit ethical offences, they can be held accountable. No “how could I have known?” excuses. Back in the olden days, we all signed off that we’d read the company manual.
