What is it about provaccine ads that they so frequently feature huge images of syringes and needles?🤦🏻‍♂️https://twitter.com/ChelseaLShover/status/1358449410552700931 …

Yeah seriously. I am a recovering needlephobe (at one point I couldn't get a needle without some combination of fainting, puking, screaming, crying and shaking). Those ads actually make it a lot harder on me cuz I keep having to desensitization exercises after getting surprised

And like EVERY TIME I get surprised by one and get an eeeee-heeby-jeebies reaction, I then have to sink 20 minutes into desensitizing myself until I can look at it without getting the Willies. Cuz otherwise my phobia comes back.

There's no selection pressure for pro-science organizations to learn good messaging, or even non-self-harming messaging. A snake oil salesman, woo-woo mystic, or political polemicist has to be very effective at messaging or they go extinct. A scientist does not.

Makes it look like a pretty large bore needle. I get a little queasy looking at it.

That needle did look large while I was waiting my turn for vaccination. But reading about another Congressman dying from COVID related illness was much more scary.
