Oh, bloody hell, Nate. If anything, the process as designed is a bit too lax when it comes to approving drugs.https://twitter.com/NateSilver538/status/1357704397824876544 …

Part of the issue IMO is that people are interpreting the question "Why is this taking so long?" as "Is there slack in the current process?" (A seems to be: Maybe a *bit* but not much) when the better question might be whether the process as currently designed is too risk-averse.

Here's something I wrote three years before the pandemic discussing this very issue...https://sciencebasedmedicine.org/donald-trump-versus-the-fda-part-2/ …

Why didn't the FDA do a rolling review? Doesn't the EMA do that?

There was a thought that the FDA would approve the vaccine for those most at risk just based on interim analyses, but the convalescent plasma debacle put an end to that.

They have no responsibility or accountability or power. If people die, not their fault. So from that position, sure, wave it through.

I've found that many people who work in the statistician/data scientist/programmer arena are like engineers, they mistake math for science and don't acknowledge how biased data can be. Data is not neutral and can be the realm of people overly convinced of their own objectivity.

Oh, definitely. Ditto scientists in the physical sciences, like physics, chemistry, etc. They don't understand the complexities and biases baked into epidemiological and clinical trial data and think that analyzing such data requires just a good knowledge of statistics.

I appreciate your responses for their content, but I don’t understand why Nate seems to get under your skin. Why not simply reply with the substance and skip the passive-aggressiveness (I’ve seen this in several of your responses).
